One thing learned: Check the weather before traveling
I planned on visiting Great Falls, Montana at the end of October. My Airbnb reservations were made, and I was ready to visit the state before winter arrived. However, the night before driving to Great Falls, I discovered that a winter storm warning had been issued for the area. 6 to 23" of snow were predicted from Tuesday to Thursday! The storm would not arrive till late Tuesday, and I figured I could drive to my destination before the snow hit, but I was unsure about leaving later in the week. Most of the roads I would be driving on were byways. Would they be plowed? If they were not plowed, how long till the roads were passable again? I did not know.
Ultimately, I decided to cancel my trip plans for Montana. I will visit Great Falls a different, warmer month. With this unexpected "free week", I'll spend more time in South Dakota and maybe arrive home for Thanksgiving a few days earlier than planned.
